[Podcast] COVALENCE: Crowdfunding SciFi Indie

For our latest podcast episode, we get with the crowd and dive into an ambitious near-future sci-fi feature film. ‘Covalence’ is the brainchild of Creator VC cinematographer Oktay Ortabasi. The film aims to explore profound sisterhood and shared human connections in a near-future dystopia. To bring this epic intelligent sci-fi story to the screen, Oktay is turning to crowdfunding for support.

To shine a light on the production Oktay brought with him key members of the film’s cast and crew to talk extensively with us. These included director Michael Norman to talk about the film’s practical effects and Primetime Emmy Award-winning actor Kim Estes, who stars as Max in the film. Together, the team unpacked what it takes to build a grounded, character-driven thriller from the ground up.

Throughout the interview, Oktay discussed his extensive behind-the-camera background, that informs his approach. COVALENCE’s visual language promises to be one with atmospheric depth, not flashy CGI, to build tension and set the scene. Michael Norman offered a behind-the-scenes look at designing a believable near-future world on an independent budget. Kim Estes shared some insight on his role as Max, and how they are bringing this complex character to life. Together they shared their compelling insights into what it takes to bring emotional authenticity in a high-concept futuristic story.

Moreover, beyond the creative process, we explored the reality of independent film financing in today’s landscape. The team recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the production. The response from the film community has been incredible. While COVALENCE has officially exceeded its initial funding target, the campaign is still actively running! That means there is still time for film fans, supporters, and fellow indie filmmakers to get directly involved, secure exclusive backer rewards, and take part in bringing this picture to life.
