Shining a Spotlight on rising Bigotry, through the power of film.

Here at Cine Bijou we pride ourselves on celebrating diversity in film, especially indie films. The recent election results in the US, preceded by the increase in the far right movement here in the UK and the rest of Europe look to peddle their hate towards immigrants, refugees, an assortment of racial and cultural minorities, women and the LGBTQ+ community. The election of Donald Trump as US president serves to amplify that hatred likely to gain legitimacy coming from the office of one of the most powerful countries on the planet.

WE CANNOT SIT IDLY BY AS THIS HAPPENS. To counter this Cine Bijou will dedicate much of its content to stories from diverse cultures and people. Editor and founder Ramon Writes has over the last 12 years featured the work and words of filmmakers from all over the world and an assortment of communities. More recently he is featuring short films that look to be in the running for an OSCAR nomination in the Best Live Action Short category. Our mission is to promote stories the far right don’t want you to hear or see; tales of courage, hardship, adversity, fortitude, and of course love and romance – stories that counter narrative of these communities as an invading force, and instigators of the erosion of cultural traditions.

Our hope is that we fight hate with positivity, counter bigotry with awareness and encourage unity rather than division. We have a plethora of work to feature from the international and intersectional film communities. With that in mind then, we want to feature stories and interview cinematic creatives from the following groups;

  • LGBTQ+
  • People of colour – especially if you are living in the UK, US or European countries where increasing far right activities are driving increasing bigotry
  • Immigrants whether you are 1st, 2nd, 3rd generation and beyond
  • Refugees seeking asylum
  • Women filmmakers telling women’s stories
  • Filmmakers from all religious communities.
  • We also welcome filmmakers impacted by the recent conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, from all sides.

Please remember we want to feature a diverse tapestry of work from a rainbow of diverse filmmakers. We want to spotlight the hard stories and hard truths but we also want to point to the light at the end of the tunnel.
